WHAT IS WESTERN MEDICAL ACUPUNCTURE?

What is Western Medical Acupuncture & how does it differ from traditional acupuncture?

Western Medical Acupuncture is an adaptation of Chinese Acupuncture, however it's delivered from dual trained health professionals such as doctors, nurses or allied health professionals, using knowledge from evidence based medicine alongside the theories of traditional acupuncture.

Medical acupuncture also differs from traditional Chinese acupuncture as it focuses on the management of a condition and its troubling symptoms rather than the diagnosing the condition. It is used for people who already know their diagnosis so the acupuncture sessions can then focus on the treatment of their symptoms.

What does acupuncture feel like and what are it's effects?

Acupuncture uses fine needles to gentle stimulate acupuncture points. These needles are as fine as a hair and produce an odd sensation known as 'Di-Qi' which is like a heaviness, acheyiness or a funny twinge. It is not fully understood how acupuncture works to help alleviate symptoms.

Symptoms can respond in a few ways after the treatment session after the session. A proportion will feel an effect straight away with symptoms relief to varying degrees or there may have a temporary relief from symptoms before going back to as before or just a bit better than before. There may also be a temporary exacerbation of symptoms before they get better or may have no change in symptoms. It is hard to tell before treatment starts how they will respond but a fair amount of people get a positive response even if it is from a general sense of wellbeing afterwards.

It is not only the primary condition that may get beneficial effects from acupuncture but there are general effects such as also a sense of relaxation, or renewed energy and wellbeing. People can also feel so relaxed that they can feel tired and sleepy afterwards. It is recommended that you go home to relax after treatment and try to avoid anything strenuous or driving if you feel particularly affected by tiredness after a session.
